Hello! My name is Soumya Jaiswal, and I am entering as a first year medical student at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. In 2023, I graduated from the University of Cincinnati through the Connections BS/MD Program with a Bachelors of Science in Medical Sciences and minors in Public Health and Ecology & Evolution.
A long string of words that do not explain very much. I better define myself as a Virgo sun and moon.
As a child, I moved numerous times across the United States, never staying in one school for longer than two years. Because of this, I was eager to uproot and discover someplace new and unexplored in college. But finding myself finally in the same city after three years of high school here was the greatest boon in disguise.
My interests are continuously rotating, but I have an extensive background in theater, community-based activism, reproductive healthcare justice, Spanish, journalism, and graphic design. Aside from my academic work, I am Co-President of the University of Cincinnati chapter of Planned Parenthood Generation Action and an intern at Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio. I am also a UHP Ambassador and Chair of the Connections program. I was a Clinical Research Coordinator at the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital in the Infectious Diseases department for three years and have worked at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
My current focus and passion is epidemiology, the precarious balance between science and community. After medical school, I hope to pursue a Masters in Public Health concentrating in epidemiology. I am not sure of much as to where my future will take me, but I am certain I want to specialize within pediatrics. I hope to one day work for the Epidemiology Intelligence Services with the CDC, a research based public institution, or perhaps even in a large metropolitan hospital outside of the US.
Until then, I will continue to cultivate myself as a citizen of an ever-growing world, overcoming these learning curves.
